Pioneers compete in late-season meets

George Fox Final Qualifier | May 16, 2019

NEWBERG, Ore. -- Miguel Haro Ruiz attempted to improve on his time in the 800 meters on Thursday at the George Fox Final Qualifier. The junior finished in 1:56.90, shy of his personal record of 1:55.23. The event was at Stoffer Stadium.

Matthew Weston was entered into the field, but did not compete on Thursday. His career-best times remain 11.15 in the 100 meters and 22.37 in the 200 meters. 

Logan Kyle finishes the season as the only Pioneers student-athlete on the NCAA Division III top-50 performance list where he's ranked 40th in the pole vault. Kyle finished with a career-best mark of 15 feet, 2.75 inches (4.64m) at the L&C Invite last month. 

The NCAA Div. III Championships will be held in Geneva, Ohio on May 23-25.

SALEM, Ore. -- Miguel Haro Ruiz ran his all-time best in the 1,500 meters as the Lewis & Clark Pioneers competed in their second-to-last event prior to the NCAA Division III Championships on Saturday at McCulloch Stadium.

Haro Ruiz crossed in 3:58.41 at the West Coast Invitational, his fourth-ever sub four-minute time and a personal record over his 2018 Northwest Conference Championships time of 3:59.13.

Morgan Taylor matched her career best in the 100 meters. Syrah Starnes threw the hammer, while Sam Johnson competed in the 110-meter hurdles and long jump.

Key Moments

Haro Ruiz placed ninth in the 1,500 meters to finish in the top half of the 19-person field. Prior to Saturday, he had ran one race under four minutes this season - at the L&C Spring Break Open in March.

Taylor's time of 13.41 matched her personal record set on May 3 at the Portland Twilight.

Johnson jumped 19 feet, 9.75 inches (6.04m) in the long jump and placed third in the field. His time of 17.82 was good for third in the 110-meter hurdles. Starnes threw for third place in the hammer with a best effort of 119 feet, 8 inches (36.47m).
