PORTLAND, Ore. - After trailing the entire game, the Lewis & Clark women's basketball team made a late comeback against No. 11 Montclair State in their final Bon Appetit NWC Tipoff Classic game, but the Pioneers unable to pull out the win falling 53-48.
Ayisat Afolabi led the Pioneers in points with 16, finishing two-of-four from three-point range and two-for-two from the free-throw line. Senior Casey Zinn had another strong night for the Pioneers, netting nine points and pulling down a team-high eight rebounds, while earning four blocks and two steals. Sarah Anderson also ended the night with nine points for the Pios.
Melissa Tobie led all players with 20 points for the Red Hawks, while also collecting a game-high nine boards.
It took the Pioneers a while to find their rhythm in the first half with the Red Hawks opening up the contest with 10 unanswered points. Montclair State would continue to rack up points, eventually running up a 22-5 advantage. Despite the setbacks the Pioneers continued to fight through, eventually cutting the deficit back to 10 points with 7:34 to go until halftime. Montclair would take a 33-22 lead into the intermission.
The second half opened with the Pioneers knocking down seven points to make it a 37-29 game in MSU's favor. The Red Hawks would recapture a double-digit lead and hold onto it until the 5:43 mark, when the Pioneers went on an 11-0 run. The run was started by a Kelley Koeppen layup assisted by Natalie Kelly. Afolabi would contribute five points to the run, while Anderson hit a three and Zinn drained a free-throw, making it a 49-48 game with 2:29 left in the game.
The Red Hawks would increase their lead to three points moments later with 1:55 on the clock. The Pioneers would have their chances over the final minute but would be unable to make any of them connect, eventually falling 53-48.
