PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers are in the win column for the first time in 2017-18 after a 79-69 victory over the St. Catherine Wildcats on Saturday at Pamplin Sports Center.
Lauren Wood scored 21 points and had her second-straight double-double with 11 rebounds. Miyah Leith added 22 points for the Pioneers, who stretched the lead throughout the second half to close out the win.
"The game was definitely a dogfight up until the very end, but it was a team win and everyone pushed through the ebbs and flows," said Wood.
The Wildcats were led by Audra Clark's 25 points.
With 2:45 remaining in the third quarter, Wood scored to move the Pioneers ahead by 10 as Lewis & Clark outscored St. Catherine in both the third and fourth quarters, the latter 23-18. The Pioneers shot 47 percent from the floor and 36 percent from 3-point range, a significant improvement from three days prior when the Pios made just 14 percent from long range in a 67-61 loss to Oregon Tech.
A pair of free throws by Clark early in the fourth quarter brought St. Catherine (1-1) to within three, capping off a 9-2 run by the Wildcats. The Pios answered by scoring nine straight of their own on layups by Caitlin Brown and Leith before a 3-pointer by Janessa Willie.
Both teams committed 20-plus turnovers and scored 20-plus points off of them. The Pios held a 20-6 edge in fastbreak points.
The Pios are playing a stretch of five games in the first 10 days of the season. Saturday's game was part of the L&C Bon Appetit Tip-Off Classic, which included Linfield defeating Corban, 84-77, in the opening game.
"We just have to focus these next weeks and work on getting better in preparation for conference."
Lewis & Clark (1-1) opens the Northwest Conference schedule on Dec. 1 at Willamette.
The tournament continues on Sunday at Pamplin Sports Center. Linfield and St. Catherine play at 2 p.m. followed by the Pios against Corban at 4 p.m.
