Pioneers move up to fourth in second round of NWC Fall Classic

BANKS, Ore. -- Lewis & Clark's Annie McCutchan was able to hold her 10th place spot with an 8-over-par 80 in the second round of the Northwest Conference Fall Classic this Sunday.

She tied for 10th place next to Pacific's Briana Finau and Pacific Lutheran's Madison LaVergne. Whitman's Phoebe Nguyen was the Fall Classic's leader after a 1-over-par 73.

"Annie played solid but not up to her potential even though she put up competitive scores," said head coach James Yen. "Annie didn't feel comfotable in both days but she batteld well through the wet course and unconditonal greens."

The Pioneer's improved their standings moving up to fourth place as a team trailing behind George Fox, Whitman, and Whitworth.

Tori Eichten was able to break into the top 20 finishing 19th after her 9-over-par score in the second round. Annika Clunk almost did the same but placed 21st with a second round score of 81 which is a seven stroke improvment from her first round. Elizabeth Moretti finished 37th after a score of 106.

"I'm super stoked" said head coach James Yen. "Both teams seem to be improving the more golf we play! I am looking forward to the spring season."

The women's golf season will resume in the spring.

Day 1

A 7-over-par 79 from Annie McCutchan led the Lewis & Clark Pioneers during the opening round of the Northwest Conference Fall Classic at Quail Valley Golf Course on Saturday.

The junior posted a 79 to sit tied for a 10th-place spot with Pacific Lutheran's Madison LaVergne. Tianna Brown of George Fox and Phoebe Nguyen of Whitman are the round-one leaders after 2-over-par 74s.

"Greens turned out to be pretty fast and putting was crucial to how the team performed," said McCutchan. "Luckily, the weather held out and we got a lot of sun by the end."

Lewis & Clark sits in fifth place as a team, trailing George Fox, Whitman, Whitworth and Pacific Lutheran. The Pios are two back of the Lutes for fourth. The NWC Fall Classic is the first of three tournaments that determine the conference team champion.
