ORANGE, Calif. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers scored two early goals before facing a barrage of second-half shots in a 4-2 loss at Chapman on Sunday afternoon.
Senior Rochelle Jordan and freshman Caroline Hennes scored about six minutes apart to put the Pios up 2-0 on the Panthers by the 24th minute at Wilson Field. Both goals were each player's first of the season after Lewis & Clark was shutout at Whittier, 1-0, on Saturday in the season opener.
Chapman cut the deficit by one as the match approached halftime when Kourtney Kingsmore scored against Lewis & Clark starting goalkeeper Hannah Osmundson, who made four saves in the opening 45 minutes.
The second half was completely different than the first as Lewis & Clark (0-2-0) went from having an 11-9 advantage in shots to being outshot 22-3 in the second half. Chapman scored goals in the 60th, 71st and 78th minutes, a stretch in which the Pios faced 16 shots. Kingsmore finished with two goals and an assist, with the other Chapman (2-0-0) scores coming from Emily Holbrook and Jordyn Bradbury.
Emily Schmelling eventually replaced Osmundson in net and made two saves. Osmundson (0-2-0) finished with nine saves in 77 minutes played.
Shots were scarce for the Pios in the second half. Isobel Fikso missed wide early and Anna Saucedo forced a save by Chapman's Kristin Kleinow (2-0-0) in the 66th minute. Alexa Hanson was denied in the 80th minute, Lewis & Clark's last shot of the game.
The Pioneers will attempt to rebound with their first regular season home game on Friday at 7 p.m. against Oregon Tech. Lewis & Clark also plays on Sunday at Griswold Stadium against Cal Lutheran.
