PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers weren't able to attack the Cal Lutheran net throughout Sunday afternoon's game at Griswold Stadium and allowed three second-half goals by the Regals in a 3-0 defeat.
It was the final non-conference game for the Pios, who play on Wednesday at George Fox to start Northwest Conference play.
"It was frustrating to not get the result we wanted," said senior Mackenzie Cornell-Maier, who had one of the Pios' three shots in the game. "We had a hard connecting with our forwards in the front. It's pretty clear that we need to work on getting the ball to our forwards' feet so they can score some goals."
After a scoreless first half, Cal Lutheran's Ryley Settles scored two goals in the 53rd and 54th minutes to give the Regals a lead before Kali Youngdahl scored in the 64th minute.
Meanwhile, Lewis & Clark was limited to just two shots the entire game. In the first half, Cornell-Maier took a header three minutes into the game, which was stopped by Cal Lutheran's starting goalkeeper, Stacy Choate-Ciletti. Alexia Olsen tried another in the 70th minute from the right side of the box, but it was saved as well.
Overall, the Regals outshot Lewis & Clark, 15-3. Emily Schmelling, who started in goal for the Pios, made four saves in 52 minutes. Hannah Osmundson replaced her after Settles' first goal and gave up Settles' second score shortly afterward.
"We've had a hard time all season staying solid all 90 minutes and today was no exception," said Cornell-Maier. "They scored all three of their goals in ten minutes. Defensively, we made errors and they took advantage of that."
Lewis & Clark returns to Griswold Stadium on Sept. 25 after three games on the road. The match against George Fox on Wednesday begins at 7 p.m.
