Pioneers downed with one minute left in second overtime

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A goal with 53 seconds remaining in the final overtime dropped the Lewis & Clark Pioneers, 1-0, in a home game against the Willamette Bearcats on Thursday night.

Shanna Keil scored on Kate Matthews' cross from the left side for the very rainy game's only score at Griswold Stadium. The score followed an effort by Lewis & Clark's Lulu Adams that went just wide of the Willamette net.

In the first overtime, Alexa Hanson fed a 35-yard free kick into the box that nearly found Anna Saucedo's head, but was just outside of Saucedo's reach. Caroline Hennes fired a hard strike off the post moments later.

The Pioneers played up in the 78th minute when Carla Thomas forced a save by Emily Sewall on a header. Next, Hennes' shot hit off the left post from a cross by Rochelle Jordan. Taylor Hudson followed it with another shot that went wide left. Hudson had one more shot before the end of the second half, but the game went into overtime.

Lewis & Clark used defensive saves by Isobel Fikso and Paige Barta. Fikso's happened in the 23rd minute when Madelynn Ellis made a run up the left side and took a shot from 25 yards on a deflected slide tackle by Lewis & Clark goalkeeper Hannah Osmundson. Fikso kicked it away in front of the net. In the 47th minute, Barta stopped Liz Stewart's close chance near the left post.

Four minutes in, Anna Saucedo sent a header toward Sewall and Hudson forced another save in the 18th minute for all of the Pioneers' shots in the opening half.

Lewis & Clark plays at Puget Sound on Saturday.
