PORTLAND, Ore. -- Courtney Schmidt scored her third goal of the season for the team's only tally as the Lewis & Clark Pioneers lost to the Willamette Bearcats, 3-1, on Wednesday night at Griswold Stadium.
Schmidt tapped the shot in off the deflection by one of the Willamette defenders to even the match in the 33rd minute. The freshman's goal gives her eight points on the season, second-most on the team.
The Bearcats had a 2-1 lead at halftime after scores by Kelsey Walker in the 16th minute and Emmy Manset in the 34th. Walker's was unassisted, while Manset's score was off the pass from Jenae Arnold. Willamette (11-4-2, 8-4-1 NWC) added another in the 69th minute by Lacey Jones.
Lewis & Clark (3-12-2, 2-10-1 NWC) was outshot 18-4 and Willamette held an 11-3 advantage in shots-on-goal. Hannah Osmundson (3-7-1) started the game in goal for the Pioneers and made seven saves before Emily Schmelling finished the final 11 minutes of the game.
Willamette goalkeeper Kristen Barclay (9-4-2) stopped two shots in addition to allowing the goal by Schmidt, who scored her second goal in the last four games. She had scored points in three of her first five collegiate games before missing three of her next five games.
Lewis & Clark will finish the season with two road games before returning home to celebrate Senior Day on Nov. 5 against Pacific Lutheran. Seniors Kori Swanson and Tasha Addington-Ferris will be honored before the match.
