NEWBURG, Ore. -- Megan Sawyer kept the Bruins off the board as the Lewis & Clark Pioneers (2-2-1) took on George Fox (2-1-1) in their conference opener. The Pios won the match 1-0 thanks to five saves made by Sawyer, and a goal off a free kick from Courtney Schmidt towards the end of the first half.
In what was another very physical game, the Pios and Bruins fought hard for possession, with the Pioneers doing a good job of keeping the ball in Bruins territory. Megan Sawyer played the full 90 minutes for the Pios, saving two of the Bruins' five shots on goal in the first half. The Bruins took 14 shots to the Pios' nine, but strong efforts from the Lewis & Clark defense kept them from finding the back of the net.
The game was high energy and physical from the start with Sawyer facing a shot just 2:19 into the start of the half. The Pios racked up nine fouls with two yellow cards to the Bruins 14, the contests over loose balls getting chippy as both teams fought for the win in their first conference game of the season.
Courtney Schmidt's lone goal of the contest came off a free kick that was the result of a slew of fouls from the Bruins. The ball found the back, left side of the net off an assist from freshman Brecklyn Beighle. Coming at the 40:20 mark in the half, the Pioneers defense used that momentum after halftime to keep the Bruins scoreless for the rest of the game.
- Courtney Schmidt's three shots in the game were all on goal
- Freshman Angelina Petreson and Brecklyn Beighle lead the team in assists, each with one
- Megan Sawyer leads in saves with five
- The Pios have a four-way tie for points leader
- Julia Markmann has 14 shots in five games
The Pioneers take on Pacific on Sunday at home, inviting the Boxers to Griswold Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 12pm.
