PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers had their conference opener against the Whitman Blues. After doubles, the Pioneers were only down 2-1 to the Whitman Blues. Although after singles, the Pioneers took a 7-3 defeat.
As the afternoon progressed, the Pioneers had some momentum shifts in both singles and doubles. Carla Thomas had a strong performance in both singles and doubles for the Pioneers along with doubles partner, Rachael Rice. Both Madelyn Landerfelt and Riley Hanks had great showings against a couple of nationally ranked Blues.
Thomas and Rice were standouts in doubles being the only Pioneers' doubles to give the Blues a close battle. Thomas and Rice started with a 1-4 deficit, and fought their way back to a 5-4 deficit. In the end, Thomas and Rice were able to get momentum to help them finish the game against the Blues with a tie breaker. Thomas and Rice finished with a 8-7, (7-3) win over Whitman's Anastasia Redline and Audrey Grigore.
Another close-game followed for Thomas in singles. Thomas started with a 2-1 lead, but as the match went on the momentum switched to result in a 6-4 win of the first set for Whitman's Audrey Grigore. Although, Thomas could not finish the match which ended in a 6-4, 3-6 (12-10) loss. Landerfelt faced Whitman's Andrea Gu, who is ranked nationally at 27. Landerfelt put up a battle, but ended with a 6-2, 6-2 loss. Hanks also battled with another one of Whitman's nationally ranked player, Mary Hill, and had a 6-0, 6-2 defeat.

The Pioneers head to Texas this upcoming weekend to play against Southwestern (Tex.) and Trinity (Tex.) on Feb. 8 and Feb. 9.
