Lewis & Clark splits Sunday matches; Four named All-Tournament

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- After sweeping Friday's matches at the UC-Santa Cruz Slugfest Volleyball Tournament, the Lewis & Clark Pioneers fell in five sets (25-22, 20-25, 25-8, 22-25, 10-15) to Redlands before defeating Mills College in straight sets to move to 3-1 on the season.

Junior Alexe Navarro and freshman Julia Somers earned 1st Team All-Tournament honors, while freshmen Kortney Meyer and Mikayla Lopez received 2nd Team spots. No other team had four players selected for all-tournament awards.

Redlands and Lewis & Clark split the first two sets in the day's opening match, and things looked the Pioneers way after winning the third set 25-8. Redlands took the fourth and fifth sets to hand the Pioneers their first loss of the season.

Somers and Ali Carleton had 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while Navarro pulled up 30 digs. Lopez was the Pios' top setter with 15 assists.


Lewis & Clark 3, Mills College 0

Lewis & Clark bounced back against Mills College, taking the match in straight sets 25-11, 25-9, 25-11. It was a quick turnaround for the Pios, as the game started about an hour after the Redlands match ended.

Maeleen Hopeau led the Pioneers with six kills, and Emma Contreras, Casey Myszkowski and Somers added five apiece. Sam Yorke has 13 assists for Lewis & Clark and Asha Hart added 10. Annika San Nicolas had 10 digs.

The Pioneers bested Mills 28-6 in kills and 15-2 in service aces.

Lewis & Clark plays next at Western Oregon on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
