PALATINE HILL -- Eight incoming student-athletes will make up the incoming Lewis & Clark volleyball class, Pioneers head coach Stacie Matz-Gordon announced on Wednesday. The octet will join reigning Northwest Conference Libero of the Year Alexe Navarro and a talented sophomore group set to return to the program.

The Pios ended last season in fourth place in the NWC, their highest finish since 2011, improving by two conference wins. Lewis & Clark exceeded expectations after being picked seventh in the NWC Preseason Coaches Poll.

Lewis & Clark begins the season with tournaments in Colorado and Texas over the first two weeks of September before starting Northwest Conference play on Sept. 16-17 at Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran. The home schedule commences on Sept. 23 against George Fox and begins a stretch of seven of eight games on the home court at Pamplin Sports Center.

Navarro broke the Lewis & Clark all-time career digs record last season and will look to add to her total of 1,504 during her senior year. At the end of last season, Navarro ranked in the top 15 among career active leaders expected to return this year. She'll be joined by eight returning sophomores including All-NWC Second-Team selection Julia Somers and setter Mikayla Lopez. Somers sat second in the conference in NWC kills per set, while Lopez ranked seventh in assists per set.

"We couldn't be more excited to incorporate this young women into our program," said Matz-Gordon, who enters her fourth year as head coach. "They bring depth, talent and a commitment to what Lewis & Clark Volleyball represents."
