Lewis & Clark posts first victory in final non-conference games

SEGUIN, Texas -- Sophomore Emma Contreras put down nine kills to help the Lewis & Clark Pioneers to a 25-20, 18-25, 25-17, 25-16 victory over Howard Payne on Saturday afternoon at Texas Lutheran's Memorial Gymnasium.

Contreras landed a .391 hitting percentage, which is a career-best for her when totaling 20 or more attempts. Julia Somers had her sixth consecutive game of double-digit kills after posting 11. She added seven digs and a season-high three service aces. Casey Myszkowski put together her fourth game this season of hitting .250 or better and also had four blocks. Victoria Hernandez had her best digs performance of the Texas Lutheran tournament, bringing up 17 against Howard Payne.

Somers served for seven-straight points in the third set, which was on the heels of Howard Payne's only set win in the second, to bring the Pioneers out to an 11-1 lead. Annika San Nicolas did similarly in the fourth, scoring five-in-a-row, including three aces, which set a new career best for her.

For the fourth time in six losses this season, Lewis & Clark scored 20 or more points in at least three sets, as Texas Lutheran won 25-21, 25-22, 25-22.

The Pios used a four-point run in the first set to tie it at 17 apiece before the tournament-host Bulldogs scored eight of the next 12 points. Lewis & Clark trailed the majority of the second set, although the Pioneers rallied back after falling behind 16-8 to have a chance. Texas Lutheran was successful landing kills to claim the final four points of the third set.

Kortney Meyer and Somers landed nine kills apiece, with Meyer hitting .444 for the match. Somers nearly had a double-double with 12 digs while putting down four aces. Contreras and Myszkowski combined for 11 kills. Mikayla Lopez finished with 16 assists.

The Pios begin Northwest Conference play next weekend in Tacoma, Wash. with games against Puget Sound on Friday and Pacific Lutheran on Sept. 17.
