Pioneers head to Portland for home opener after loss at PLU

TACOMA, Wash. -- Lewis & Clark only scored in the 20s in Saturday's opening set of a 25-22, 25-14, 25-13 loss to the Pacific Lutheran Lutes at the Olson Gymnasium. The loss drops the Pioneers to 1-8 and ends a nine-game road trip to begin the 2016 season.

Lewis & Clark plays George Fox on Friday at the Pamplin Sports Center in the first of seven of the next eight games at home in Portland.

Alexe Navarro, last year's Northwest Conference Libero of the Year, played in her second match of the season and finished with seven digs. Victoria Hernandez added 15 digs and both had an ace.

Julia Somers finished with double-digit kills for the eighth time in nine matches this season. She put down 11 to go with 10 digs. Kortney Meyer also had 10 digs and a .450 hitting percentage, her second .400-plus performance of the season.

In the opening set, the Pioneers rallied back from an 18-12 deficit to get to 21-21 before a bad set, an attack error and a kill by PLU's Isabella Zubrod won the set for the Lutes, 25-22.

Lewis & Clark went point-for-point with Pacific Lutheran through the first seven points of the second set, but the Lutes took off from there, scoring 10 of the next 11 points to win the set by 11.

In the third, Pacific Lutheran built a 21-8 lead and rolled to a 25-13 finish to close out the match against the Pios.
