PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Lewis & Clark volleyball team wrapped up the 2016 season with a 14-25, 25-22, 27-29, 25-18, 15-9 win over the Willamette Bearcats on Saturday at Pamplin Sports Center.
The Pios (5-15, 4-9 NWC) were led by the double double from Julia Somers, who had 18 digs and a match-high 15 kills. Teammates Emma Contreras and Casey Myszkowski added 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Lewis & Clark had eight service aces in the win including three by Kourtney Meyer.
The Bearcats (6-15, 4-9 NWC) picked up 15 kills from Alexa Dowdell and 12 more from Jennifer Lane. Willamette had 10 service aces and seven blocks in the defeat.
The Bearcats took the first set on the strength of an 85% sideout percentage and a .250 to .051 advantage in hitting percentage. The host Pioneers started its comeback with a 25-22 win in the second set. Somers had her second-straight set with four kills to lead Lewis & Clark.
With the match tied at a set apiece, Willamette outlasted Lewis & Clark in the third set, 29-27. Pios' seniors Bridgette Henningsen and Alexe Navarro, who were playing in their final home match, will remember the fourth set comeback that sparked the Senior Day win. Trailing by 6-2, the Pios came back with an 11-1 run that seemed to energize the home crowd and put Lewis & Clark ahead 13-7. The Pioneers went on to win the set, 25-18.
In the fifth and final set, Lewis & Clark raced out to an early 6-2 lead en route to the 15-9 win. Myszkowski, Somers and Emma Contreras each added two kills for the Pios win. Lewis & Clark hit the Bearcats, .500 to .000 in the final set.
The Pioneers end their season with a trip to Whitman and Whitworth Nov. 4th and 5th.
